The northern Bitterroot mountains, north of Highway 12 and Lolo Pass on the Montana / Idaho border, are lower and less-rugged looking than their southern siblings, but the hiking can be superior. Many of the trails start in relatively high country, so you often get that open, alpine feel for some or all of the expedition. Lots of lakes dot this area tucked on one side of the divide or another - make sure you have the right state fishing license if you plan to make a few casts.
