A short climb on a jeep trail to a pretty lake.
The trail is on the right just before the main Middle Fork trailhead. Park at the trailhead - not at this junction (we’ve seen cars get tickets here). Most of this trail is actually a rough jeep trail. You climb for a mile or two, then the road ends and it’s another flat 1/2 mile or so to the lake. The hike is unspectacular, but it’s a pretty lake and not too hard to get to. Look for strawberries along the trail in July.
From Phillipsburg drive 5 miles south on state highway 1. Turn right onto highway 38. Drive about 6 miles, then turn left onto Moose Lake Road. Drive 15 miles up this good gravel road to the trailhead. You will pass Moose Lake and Project Vote Smart on the way. The trailhead has plenty of parking, horse facilities, and an outhouse.
